Someone asked, “When people are approaching the end of their lives, how can they maintain a peaceful mind and be comfortable discussing their own death?”
The Master answers:
Avoiding the topic of death is an unhealthy mindset. People are generally afraid of discussing about death because they do not understand that birth is the beginning of death, and death is the beginning of birth. Having said that, accepting death by theory is different from the actual experience of death.
People tend to perceive everything as permanent, as if nothing will change. The reality is, everything in this world is constantly changing, however, most changes are so minute that people do not see it. Likewise, life is constantly moving forward, the cycle of human life is a route that everyone must go through.
The deceased leader of Tzu Chi’s commissioners, Lin Hui Tang, had continued to work even when he was ill. When someone asked him where he wants to go in the future, coming back to Tzu Chi was his answer. He was completely at ease with death. His attitude is like what was said in the Buddhist scriptures, “When approaching the end of life, the mind be without attachment, the thought be without inversion.” He devoted himself to helping others when he was alive and left the world with no fear. He had indeed lived a valuable life.
