We need harmony and stability in life. All living creatures in the world yearn for harmony. Only by nurturing our hearts to be harmonious would we be able to learn to respect others. Mutual respect will then lead to mutual love!
There is a fairy-tale in Japan about a wild chestnut tree. Somewhere in a forest high up in the mountain, there is a wild chestnut tree. One day, there was a sudden strong wind that blew the ripened chestnuts all over the ground. The sight caught the attention of a group of monkeys, and so they gladly brought the basket and collected the chestnuts to be shared with other monkeys back home.
When the monkeys were picking up the chestnuts, a monkey said, "We have picked enough for ourselves, let’s leave the rest to the fox. "
Therefore, they only collected a basket full of chestnuts.
In a little while, the fox came. It was happy to see chestnuts on the ground and it started to pick some up. After picking the chestnuts for a while, the fox thought, “I shall save some for the field mice!”
And so, the fox picked a reasonable amount of chestnuts and went home. A few moments later, several field mice arrived at the scene to pick the chestnuts. These mice had been picking the chestnuts for a while, thinking that there would not be any other animals which would come for the chestnuts, they took home all the remaining chestnuts.
Unbeknown to the field mice, a badger came later. It saw no chestnut on the ground, but many were still on the tree. The badger said with regret, " Why did I come so late? There's no chestnut left on the ground for me."
At that moment, a crow flew by and saw the disappointed badger. The crow felt sorry for the badger and so it flew up to the tree and started shaking the tree branches with its wings. As a result, some chestnuts fell to the ground. The badger happily picked the chestnuts and brought them home. There is such harmony and love in the animal kingdom, what a peaceful fairy-tale world!
Unfortunately, human society have been in turmoil and chaos due to the lack of harmony. The world needs peace, the society needs harmony, our hearts need kindness. That's why we must constantly cultivate our mind.
