Celebrating International Women’s Day with a Green theme

The People's Action Party Women’s Wing had chosen “Environmental sustainability” as the theme for this year’s International Women's Day celebration. For that, the Women's Wing in the Northwest District had taken the initiative to contact Tzu Chi with the hope of implementing Tzu Chi's

way of conducting its monthly community eco awareness activities in more locations. One week before the event, representatives from 14 branches went to Tzu Chi’s Eco Awareness Centre in Woodland for an educational visit. At the same time, more than 100 volunteers attended the class online to learn about how Tzu Chi conducts its monthly sustainability activity in the community and also to understand the concept of Tzu Chi's environmental protection mission, which they will share with more residents in the future.

In conjunction with International Women’s Day, PAP Women’s Wing in the Northwest District had opted to celebrate the special day with a green theme.

Hany Soh, MP of Woodgrove (Marsiling- Yee Tee GRC) :
In pinyin, the pronunciation “Wo Men” means “us” in Chinese. We should respond to the call to do something to protect mother earth and green our environment.

Tzu Chi’s long-term effort has been recognised by community organisations. As early as one week ago, representatives from various branches had arrived at Tzu Chi’s Eco Awareness Centre for an educational visit.

Susan Tan Environmental Sustainability Manager :
They have a total of 14 recycling points, where each sent a representative to attend a course at our Eco Awareness Centre. The rest of the 100 over volunteers attended the course online. We are advocating the right way of recycling. We are advocating keeping clean at source. They understand that the purpose of today’s event is mainly to educate the public and they know where the key points are.

Besides learning about the right way to do sorting, it has also strengthened their determination to promote environmental protection in the community.

Ivy Lee Woodgrove Women’s Wing Chairperson :
I have learned a lot. I used to think that environmental protection is all about bringing down all the recyclables and leaving them to the collectors. It turns out that that is not the case. I can now share more with the residents. We plan to do this at least once a month.

Ellen Lim Nee Soon South Women’s Wing Chairperson :
If nobody cares about the environment, this earth will be gone very soon. I think we must realise the importance of environmental protection and work together for the sake of our future generations and mother earth.

Taking practical actions to protect the environment is the best gift from women for mother earth on this Women’s Day.
