In May 1966, one month after Tzu Chi was founded, the association helped an 85-year-old widow, Mrs. Lin. She was from Changchou, Fukien Province, on mainland China.
She came to Taiwan when she was quite young. When her husband died, she was all alone far from her home. Her son had already died and her grandchildren had abandoned her. She live in a tiny shack of only 18 square feet. Tzu Chi provided US$7.50 a month to have someone cook for her, wash her clothes, look after her daily life, and take her to the doctor. The service continued until she passed away in February 1970.
